Midland, Ontario

When it comes to recreational properties in the cottage country of Ontario, no one centre is more important than Midland. Although Midland is the considered the hub of the Georgian Bay area (and is a part of the Greater Golden Horseshoe as well) it is quite a small town, with just under 17,000 residents making Midland Ontario real estate their fulltime living spot. If you're looking at this from the GTA, it would be as if you were living in one of the Brooklin homes outside of Oshawa.

As with other towns on Georgian Bay, however, Midland's population undergoes an explosion in the summer time. There are more than 8,000 cottages dotting Georgian Bay in all directions spreading out of Midland, and these residences attract over 100,000 people to Midland and area each year. Toronto mortgage brokers do a lot of deals with people buying summer homes in this region. This population boom is enough to justify the building and staffing of a 125-bed hospital in the community, as well as a small local airport. So, while you're leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind you still get all of the benefits of the scientific research and experimental development that the city's heath care would offer you.

Semi-permanent residents enjoy life from a Georgian Bay cottage, but Midland offers other residential structures as well. There are several resort hotels in the area, as well as prime camping opportunities in the national and provincial parks located a few kilometres out of the town.

As you may have guessed, the economy of Midland is based on the tourism sector. You won't find many company headquarters or factories making lifting slings. This means that summer is a guaranteed boom time as people come in to tour the 30,000 Islands on Georgian Bay and to fish, hike, boat and cycle in Ontario's wonderland. A railway, upon which the city was built, still operates and there is also some light industry in the area; shipping remains a major activity, and combined, this economic diversity helped bring Midland into the GH region. There are also activities that can be enjoyed during the winter from Midland, with snowmobiling and ice fishing being quite popular. There is also a modest ski hill, which has great cross country runs.

All in all, Midland is a great place for those looking for a place to visit, to make their home away from home, or to settle down permanently. Whether you're looking to relax on the dock or turn down that fitness tax credit for the freedom of the great outdoors, there is something here for you. Several real estate brokerages specialize in the cottage country surrounding the town including Royal LePage and Remax. Midland Ontario is a perfect place to live, close to the heart of the country but far enough away to relax.
